Police prosecutors have confirmed to the District Court at La that Godwin Mawuli, a final-year student of O’Reilly Senior High School, is over 19 years old, having been born on July 10, 2005.

This confirmation grants the District Court the authority to proceed with the case until the duplicate case docket is forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for advice on committal proceedings.

During a session on Thursday, September 19, 2024, Magistrate Her Worship Adwoa Benaso Asumadu-Sakyi ordered prosecutors to provide a hospital report verifying the accused’s age.

On Friday, September 20, Chief Inspector Paul Osei Adjei, standing in for the substantive prosecutor, presented multiple documents confirming Mawuli’s age, including his BECE certificate, National Health Insurance card, and House-2 forms signed by his father.

The prosecutor requested that the court remand Mawuli into police custody to facilitate ongoing investigations.

He assured the court that the duplicate case docket would likely be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office by next week.

Magistrate Asumadu-Sakyi emphasized the importance of timely proceedings, expressing concern for the family of the deceased, Edward Borketey Sackey, who was allegedly killed by Mawuli following a dispute over family wealth.

She took time to explain the court processes to Sackey’s family, urging them to remain patient as the case unfolds.

The matter has been adjourned until October 7, 2024, for updates on the investigation, and the plea of the accused has not yet been entered.

The courtroom was filled with family members of the deceased, reflecting the community’s interest in the tragic case.
