The Kade District Court has imposed a total fine of GH¢15,000 on four persons convicted for assaulting a teacher of Kade Senior High and Technical School in the Eastern Region.

According to the court, the convicts are first-time offenders and showed remorse, which informed the court’s decision to give a mitigated sentence.

Each of the four convicts is to pay GH¢1,800 as a fine to the court and an additional GH¢2,000 as compensation to the victim, bringing the total amount to GH¢15,000.

In default, they will each serve six months’ imprisonment.

The court further directed the convicts to sign a bond of good behaviour.

Meanwhile, sentencing of the fifth accused person, a 17-year-old juvenile, has been deferred, while the sixth accused, who was arrested later, has been remanded into custody.

The teacher, Michael Quayson, was ambushed on the evening of October 5, 2025, by eight individuals, including some former students, while returning home from town. He was allegedly beaten for nearly 20 minutes after enforcing strict supervision during examinations.

A video of the attack later went viral on social media, sparking nationwide outrage among teachers and the general public.

The suspects were later arrested from their hideouts.

In December 2025, NAGRAT issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of all persons involved in the assault of a teacher at Kade SHS.

Addressing the media in Koforidua at the time, Mr. Awoonor-Yevu,Eastern regional NAGRAT chairman warned that failure by authorities to prosecute the perpetrators and compensate the victim would compel teachers to embark on a nationwide sit-down strike, potentially disrupting the 2026 academic calendar.

“Justice must be swift and uncompromising, not only to serve as a deterrent but to restore confidence among teachers nationwide,” he warned.

NAGRAT described the incident as part of an alarming rise in violent attacks against teachers, particularly linked to examination invigilation, stressing that no educator should suffer physical harm or psychological trauma for performing their duties.
