The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Judge Susana Eduful, has granted bail to 48-year-old businessman, Charles Yao Anyomi, who is facing charges of defrauding by false pretence in a case involving GH¢500,000.

Anyomi, who appeared before Circuit Court 3 yesterday, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with two sureties, both of whom are required to justify the bail with landed property.

The original title deeds must be deposited at the court registry as part of the bail conditions. The matter has been adjourned to September 13, 2025.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Nancy Paintsil Esq, the alleged offence occurred in 2024. The complainant, Gifty Adoboe, a businesswoman based in Madina, Accra, had travelled to South Africa in the company of the accused. During the trip, Ms. Adoboe received a telephone call from her husband, Dennis Osei Mensah, who was in Dubai conducting gold-related business.

Prosecutors said Anyomi, who allegedly overheard the conversation, approached Ms. Adoboe with an offer to supply her with five kilograms of gold, provided she paid him GH¢500,000. Trusting his promise, the complainant and her husband transferred the funds through various channels, including the accused’s Stanbic Bank account, his mobile money account, and direct cash payments.

Investigators told the court that once the money had been handed over, Anyomi severed all contact with the complainant and went into hiding. Realising she had been deceived, Ms. Adoboe filed a formal complaint with the police.

Detectives, led by Corporal Ruth Abiamu, arrested Anyomi, who admitted during interrogation that he indeed received the money. However, he claimed that he had passed the entire amount to a man he identified only as “Hon. Charles.”

Despite repeated questioning, he failed to provide any further details that could help investigators trace this individual.

The prosecution has indicated that investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to locate the alleged accomplice and gather additional evidence in the case.
