Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, one of six individuals sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to overthrow the government, has been granted bail while his appeal is pending.
The High Court approved bail at GH¢2.5 million, requiring two credible sureties, allowing Debrah temporary release as his case is reviewed.
Debrah, a fleet manager, was convicted alongside five others in November 2023 on charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason. The court ruled that the group had plotted to destabilise the nation and overthrow the constitutionally elected government.
The six convicted are Donya Kafui (aka Ezor, a blacksmith), Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces), and three soldiers: WO II Esther Saan Dekuwine, L/Cpl Ali Solomon, and Cpl Sylvester Akanpewon. All were sentenced to death by hanging following a lengthy trial.
Meanwhile, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and Corporal Seidu Abubakar were acquitted of abetment and conspiracy charges.
The case, one of Ghana’s most high-profile treason trials in recent history, has spanned years, beginning with charges in April 2021. The prosecution, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, called 13 witnesses, including seven military officers, to testify during the trial.
