The High Court in Accra has ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate the results of 62 unaccounted polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency and declare the final winner by January 6, 2025.
Justice Forson Baah Agyapong, who presided over the case, ruled that the election process in the constituency remained incomplete based on evidence presented during the hearing.
The dispute arose after results from only 219 out of 262 polling stations were collated, yet the EC declared Awurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the parliamentary winner. Nana Akua Afriyie, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), subsequently filed a mandamus application, urging the court to compel the EC to finalize the collation process and announce the conclusive results.
Granting the application, Justice Agyapong instructed the EC to complete the collation of the remaining 62 polling stations, add the figures to the existing totals, and declare the final outcome. The court further directed the Inspector General of Police to deploy adequate security at all collation centers to maintain peace and order during the process.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s role in upholding constitutional processes and ensuring electoral transparency. It also highlights the importance of law enforcement in preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.
Observers believe this decision will set a precedent for addressing disputes in electoral matters and ensuring that all stakeholders adhere to laid-down regulations.
