A Kumasi High Court has remanded 14 individuals into prison custody for their alleged roles in violent disturbances during election day in Damongo, Savannah Region.
The court, hearing the case due to security concerns in the region, remanded 14 out of the 16 suspects arraigned, while two minors were discharged.
The disturbances reportedly stemmed from delays in announcing election results, leading to the death of one person and the extensive destruction of the Electoral Commission’s office.
Angry protesters allegedly attacked the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre, setting the EC office ablaze and causing significant damage.
The accused faces nine charges, including unlawful damage, assault, causing harm, and obstructing electoral officers from performing their duties.
The State Attorney requested a deferral of pleas to allow more time for investigations.
The defence counsel, however, appealed for their clients’ release, citing the involvement of minors.
The court ordered the release of the two minors into the care of a guardian, Alhaji Imoro Seidu, who was required to deposit his Ghana card with the court registrar.
Pleas will be taken at the next hearing on 19th December 2024.
