A security guard, Freedom Babina, also known as Yaro, has been remanded in police custody after pleading not guilty to charges of discharging a firearm in public and possessing a firearm and ammunition without authority.
The facts, as presented to the court by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Achiburi, revealed that police officers stationed at the Tema Regional PID arrested the accused on November 4, 2025 at his residence in Ashaiman.
This followed reports that he had been seen discharging a firearm indiscriminately in the neighbourhood.
A search conducted at the accused’s residence uncovered a CPX-2 pistol loaded with eight rounds of 9mm ammunition.
During interrogation, Babina stated that, in 2024, while employed by Berick Security Company at Shai Hills, he was approached by one Frederick Asare, who hired him to protect his land in Shai Hills and provided him with the pistol.
Since then, the accused has failed to lead police to the source of the weapon.
The lawyer for the accused, Noble Nelson Ademadewo, requested that the court grant his client bail, asserting that he is not a flight risk and would not interfere with investigations.
He emphasised that Babina is a family man with a fixed place of residence and is prepared to stand trial to prove his innocence.
However, the trial judge, Susana Eduful, remanded the accused in police custody, noting that, given the nature of the charges and the circumstances, there is a likelihood he may not stand trial if granted bail.
