Director of the West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), Professor. Gordon Awandare has ask couples who are planning of having big weddings postpone it or consider using online facilities.

“We need to do things online. I have seen people done weddings where they have only a few people at the location and the others join online, we can do that because this is a situation where if we take the steps now and feel the pain, we limit the damage but if we don’t take the steps to limit the damage this third wave can cause a lot of havoc”.

“If you really want to have a big wedding, you have to postpone it, otherwise do a limited wedding and use online facilities to reach all your friends and family”. He added

Prof. Awandare continued that “we have to limit the damage of the third wave because we now have the experience of what happened in January so we cannot take things for granted and continue with business as usual”.

He however contested against any suggestion of a lockdown to limit the spread of the third wave.

“Lockdown no, I don’t think we are at a point where we need a lockdown”.

On enforcement of measures to contain the spread of covid-19, Prof. Awandare said “many of the rules have been there but are not being enforced, people just flout them and there are no consequences, we have to find a few people and use them as an example that if you have a wedding or funeral with thousand at this time, it is not acceptable, so we have to crack down on the social gatherings”.
