Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi has revealed that one of the Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured in the recent attack on a Ghanaian peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon has successfully undergone surgery after being evacuated to Beirut, while four others who sustained minor injuries are stable and recovering.

Providing an update on the condition of Ghanaian troops serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Deputy Minister indicated that the injured soldier suffered serious wounds to both legs and the hip but is now stable and recuperating following surgery performed on the morning of Saturday, March 7.

According to him, four additional soldiers who sustained minor injuries during the incident are also stable and responding well to treatment.

The incident also led to significant personal losses for some of the troops.

“Unfortunately, 15 officers lost all personal effects due to a fire outbreak at their accommodation,” he wrote on Facebook.

Brogya Genfi also acknowledged international support following the incident. He highlighted that France expressed solidarity with Ghana after its Minister Delegate to the Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Alice Rufo, held a telephone conversation with him to convey support.

According to him, France has similarly raised concerns at the United Nations, noting that French peacekeepers are also deployed in Lebanon.

Mr Genfi stressed that Ghana appreciates the gesture and reiterated that all necessary measures are being taken to protect Ghanaian troops serving under the UN flag.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has lodged a formal complaint at the United Nations headquarters, stressing that all parties involved in the conflict must respect the neutrality and safety of peacekeepers operating in the mission area.
