The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a public alert over a worrying rise in cases of online blackmail and sextortion targeting individuals across the country.
Data from the Authority reveals that between January and April 2024, 155 incidents were reported, resulting in financial losses totaling GH¢103,663. However, during the same period in 2025, while the number of reported cases saw a marginal increase, the associated financial losses rose sharply to GH¢499,044.
This dramatic jump, according to the CSA, highlights the escalating financial impact of cyber-enabled extortion and the increasingly sophisticated tactics used by perpetrators.
The Authority outlined how these cybercriminals typically operate: They often create fake social media accounts using attractive photos and personas to establish trust under the guise of romantic interest. Once a relationship is formed, victims are manipulated into sharing explicit content or personal information, which is later used to extort money.
To help the public avoid falling victim to such scams, the CSA has published a set of safety guidelines and strongly encourages individuals to remain vigilant and follow these recommendations closely.
The Authority stressed that increased awareness and proactive digital hygiene are essential to reducing the growing threat of online extortion in Ghana.
