Customs officials at the Tema Port have intercepted a massive shipment of opioid drugs worth approximately GH₵20 million, which was being smuggled through Ghana en route to Niger.
The seizure is part of intensified efforts by authorities to curb drug trafficking throughout the country.
Speaking on the development, Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing Ghana from becoming a transit hub for illicit substances.
“We will not allow Ghana to be used as a passageway for illegal drugs. However, we remain committed to maintaining legitimate trade relations with Niger and other neighbouring countries,” he assured.
The interception underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to tighten border controls and prevent drug syndicates from exploiting Ghana’s trade routes.
Investigations are currently underway to identify those behind the attempted smuggling.
