The Atimatim-Maase R/C Primary and Junior High School (JHS) in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region is on the verge of collapse.
The school has become a death trap as the buildings and the pillars that support its existence are half broken and the roof ripped off.
Maase Basic School lacks almost everything, including infrastructure, desks, textbooks, and other teaching and learning materials that make teaching and learning possible.
Because of the bad nature of the school, many teachers decline postings to the school for fear of a possible collapse.
The management of the school laments that the school usually closes down any time it threatens to rain, which is impacting negatively on academics.
According to the school management, pupils do not find it pleasant and exciting to come to school because of the death trap nature of the building, which has become a grazing ground for goats, weeds, lizards, and other dangerous reptiles.
“The situation is very disheartening and pathetic; the poor condition of the school is badly affecting teaching and learning in the school.”
Speaking to the media, some residents revealed that the schools in the area since their establishment in the 1990s have not seen any maintenance as students are forced to learn in the “death trap school.”
“They added that, the school had no desk and other education materials to aid teaching and learning, they are therefore calling on the government of Ghana, Ghana Education Service, non-governmental organization (NGOs) and stakeholders to come to our aid,” they stated.
