The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) in collaboration with the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) with support from the Danish Embassy has organized a 1-day workshop with key national stakeholders as part of efforts to develop a Climate Atlas for Ghana and also understand their needs to inform the generation of relevant climate information.

The Workshop

The workshop which was held on Wednesday 1st November 2023 at the Ange Hill Hotel in Accra attracted stakeholders from key state institutions such as Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ministry of Work and Housing, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior, and Ministry of Energy among others.

Climate Atlas

The Climate Atlas combines climate science, mapping, and storytelling with indigenous knowledge and community-based research. It also serves as a vital tool for raising awareness and inspiring action on climate change.

This tool will provide decision-makers with the resources necessary for effective mitigation and adaptation planning, thereby advancing socio-economic development at the local, regional, and national levels.

Climate Atlas Mission: Installation of KAPy

A team from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) are currently in Ghana to continue engagement with the Agency on the development of the Climate Atlas for Ghana.

While in Ghana the team is expected to conduct an assessment of the Agency’s servers and facilitate the installation of a KAPy.

The KAPy will provide climate projection information. The team will again hold discussions with officers of GMet and the Danish Embassy.

Background

In December 2022, GMet signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Danish Meteorological (DMI) under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization (MOCD).

The agreement which marked the commencement of the implementation of Strategic Sector Cooperation (SCC) in Ghana is designed to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions in the fields of Meteorology and Climate-related issues.
