The death toll from the multiple-vehicle crash at Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Nsawam Highway has risen to 12, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has confirmed.
Felix Owusu, Senior Planning Manager at the NRSA, said 22 other people are receiving treatment at various hospitals following the crash, which occurred at about 4 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

Mr Owusu, however, stressed that the preliminary account should not be treated as the official cause of the crash, as the NRSA is awaiting the full police report.
“As I said from the beginning, all that we are hearing are accounts given by bystanders, and so we don’t want to rely solely on that,” he said.
He said investigators would need to obtain accounts from surviving drivers and passengers to establish exactly how the crash occurred.
“We are waiting for the police for a full report that will tell us what exactly happened and how each of the subsequent accidents or crashes occurred,” he said.
According to him, 19 of the injured victims are at the Asofa Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at the Achimota Hospital.
The crash involved seven vehicles—two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars and a tricycle—on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the highway.
Mr Owusu said the NRSA is awaiting the police’s full investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
He, however, said preliminary information gathered at the scene suggests that a broken-down tricycle may have triggered the chain of events.
“From the little we have gathered, there was a stationary tricycle or what most people call an ‘aboboyaa’. There was a tricycle which had broken down,” he said.
He said a tipper truck carrying sand reportedly stopped behind the tricycle, followed by two Sprinter buses carrying passengers.
According to Mr Owusu, another tipper truck then approached at high speed and crashed into the vehicles ahead, resulting in the multiple collisions.
He stressed that the account remains preliminary and should not be treated as the official cause of the crash until the police complete their investigation.
