The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), has criticized the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to form a committee to search for a new coach for the men’s national team.
This comes after the GFA announced that it had formed a new committee to search for a new coach for the Black Stars after coach Chris Hughton was sacked following Ghana’s early exit from the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
According to SWAG, changing four different coaches in four years, is a reflection of Ghana’s football woes, adding that the quest for a new one will only compound the problems.
“While SWAG takes account of the attempts by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) to halt the string of embarrassing AFCON shows by the Black Stars, we are convinced that the route taken especially by the GFA to form a committee to search for a new Black Stars coach is rushed, diversion and a travesty, an action which will not sufficiently address the team’s wretchedness and complications.
“Four coaches in barely five years without results speak of a larger problem, hence the appointment of a new coach, in SWAG’s considered view cannot be the panacea for the team’s unending headaches,” SWAG noted in a statement.
As a result, they have demanded that all relevant parties be fully engaged in order to find a sustainable solution to the Black Stars’ situation.
“SWAG therefore calls for a deeper soul-searching approach directed at tackling fundamental issues of the national team management, player selection, coaching, performance, etc.
“The SWAG implores the MOYS to also end the rhetoric and engage the GFA to properly find solutions to the Black Star’s abysmal showing in recent times.”
