Defence and Interior Committee Assesses Mandates of Gaming Commission and Peace Council
The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior has paid a working visit to the Gaming Commission and the National Peace Council as part of its constitutional duty to provide oversight and strengthen institutional effectiveness. The visit provided an opportunity for the Committee to familiarize itself with the mandates of both agencies, examine operational challenges, and discuss how Parliament could intervene through appropriate recommendations.
At the Gaming Commission, Acting Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo expressed concern over the rise in gambling addiction, particularly among the youth. He noted that the Commission is collaborating with the Mental Health Authority to conduct research and roll out public education programmes. Mr. Quainoo also mentioned the Commission’s struggle with inadequate office space, which continues to affect service delivery.
The Peace Council also raised similar concerns during the visit. Executive Secretary Mr. George Amoh cited delays in budget releases and insufficient office infrastructure as major setbacks to the Council’s work. He emphasized the reliance on donor funding to carry out key peace-building initiatives. The Committee assured both institutions of Parliament’s commitment to pushing for improved working conditions and timely budgetary support.
