Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has ordered a full-scale investigation into violent incidents that erupted in Bawku on Sunday, July 13, 2025, calling for calm and restraint as authorities work to uncover the facts.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, July 14, the Minister expressed concern over the renewed violence and assured that firm action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.
“We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku regarding the latest developments,” he stated. “I have directed thorough investigations into the matter and promised to take swift action based on recommendations.”
Tensions flared over the weekend following reports that unknown gunmen opened fire on a vehicle under military escort. The attack reportedly led to injuries, including one sustained by a military personnel.
In response, military personnel allegedly launched retaliatory actions that have sparked widespread condemnation.
Among the acts reportedly carried out by the soldiers was the destruction of a symbolic statue of Zugran Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the Paramount Chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area. Several civilians were also allegedly assaulted in the process.
The incidents have drawn criticism from key political figures, including Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, who described the conduct of the soldiers as unacceptable.
Mr. Ayariga condemned both the destruction of the culturally significant statue and the alleged brutality against residents. He called on the military high command to act swiftly to investigate and discipline any personnel found culpable.
At the same time, he condemned the attack on the military-escorted vehicle by unknown assailants and urged for an immediate end to all forms of violence in the troubled township.
The renewed unrest in Bawku adds to the long-standing volatility in the area, often marked by ethnic tensions and sporadic clashes between armed factions and security forces.
