The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has put its proposed 30 per cent transport fare increase on hold following recent interventions by the government to mitigate rising fuel costs.
Speaking on the development, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Mr Samuel Amoah, confirmed that the decision to pause the upward adjustment came after the President intervened to reduce diesel prices by GH¢2.00 per litre.
The temporary relief measure took effect on Tuesday, 4th August 2026, and is scheduled to run for an initial period of one month.
Mr Amoah expressed the union’s gratitude towards the government for reacting to the plight of commercial drivers.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he explained that leadership had previously engaged the sector Minister to press for urgent relief amidst soaring fuel prices.
Whilst praising the government’s swift response, he appealed to transport operators to remain patient over the next month as the union monitors ongoing developments.
He also urged authorities to consider extending the price reduction window should global crude oil prices continue their upward trajectory.
Following consultations among national executives and key industry stakeholders, the joint leadership of the GPRTU of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC) confirmed that public transport fares across all routes will remain unchanged until further notice.
The union leadership has directed all commercial drivers, station masters, and branch executives to strictly comply with the existing approved fare structure.
Transport operators have been cautioned against charging unapproved fares, whilst commuters forced to pay above the official rate are encouraged to report such infractions immediately to the nearest union office for swift action.
