Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has revealed that revenues of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Passport Office have seen significant growth the government digitalized the operations of the institutions.
He said this at the National Development Conference organized by the Church of Pentecost on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, under the theme “Moral Vision and National Development.”
According to Dr. Bawumia, the ECG was only making 450 million cedis every month for a period of four years, but after their operations were digitalized, their monthly revenue increased to 1.2 billion cedis.
“We noticed a very interesting piece of data which speaks to the problems at ECG. We looked at the data and for a period of four years or so, the revenues of ECG were virtually constant, and the values were the same. So we sent in a team to look at the architecture of revenue collections and digitalize the process. They were collecting 450 million Ghana cedis a month. When we sent in the team, there was sabotage. Malware was introduced into the system by people working there. We brought in a new architecture and after this completion of this work, 450 million a month has now increased to 1.2 billion every month.”
He added that the Passport office’s annual revenue has increased significantly since going digital, which has enabled them to stop leaks brought on by human behavior.
“Similarly, at the Passport Office, we have increased revenue from 1 million cedis a year to 64 million cedis a year. When you look at the nature at of behaviour in these institutions, there was clearly a lot of leakages, but through digitalization, we are compelling behaviour which is morally upright.”
