The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), has welcomed a potential collaboration with BH-FERTAGRO, a leading provider of innovative fertilizer solutions, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and vocational training within the country’s correctional system.

The proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by BH-FERTAGRO’s executive team, led by Managing Director Mr. Robert Kwabena Ayitey, at the Prisons Directorate Headquarters in Accra. The meeting was facilitated by Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Patrick Thomas Seidu, who also serves as the Eastern Regional Commander and Officer in Charge of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The engagement focused on developing a strategic partnership to leverage BH-FERTAGRO’s expertise in sustainable agriculture to improve food production and create year-round farming systems across prison facilities, starting with the 50-acre land at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

Mr. Ayitey outlined several proposed areas of support, including the provision of high-grade fertilizers and the implementation of an irrigation project to ensure continuous farming regardless of seasonal changes.

He emphasized that the initiative would form part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), with long-term goals to empower inmates and contribute meaningfully to prison reform.

“Agriculture has the potential to transform lives, and we are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the Ghana Prisons Service. By working together, we can improve food security in prisons and equip inmates with skills that will serve them and their communities after reintegration,” Mr. Ayitey said.

He noted that the partnership is envisioned as a multi-pronged initiative—focusing not just on food production, but also on vocational empowerment, practical training, and post-release support for inmates who wish to venture into farming.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie, in her remarks, expressed appreciation to the company for considering the welfare and development of inmates as part of its CSR efforts.

She welcomed the initiative as timely and impactful, saying it aligns with the Service’s goals of rehabilitation and self-reliance.

“I am deeply grateful to BH-FERTAGRO for thinking about the Ghana Prisons Service in such a practical and forward-thinking way. The prison farming project is very dear to my heart, and this partnership will significantly strengthen our ability to feed inmates while providing them with useful agricultural knowledge and skills,” she said.

She also underscored her commitment to expanding other support initiatives such as the “DDP Kitchen Support Project,” which seeks to improve food preparation facilities in prisons, upgrade kitchen equipment, and enhance staff capacity in nutrition and food safety.

During the visit, BH-FERTAGRO’s General Manager, Mr. Alex Kwame Donyinah, proposed the establishment of structured agricultural training programmes for inmates. These would provide hands-on experience in crop cultivation and farm management, with additional support packages for inmates upon release.

“We strongly believe our role can go beyond supplying inputs. We are looking into initiatives that will support former inmates with farming inputs and resources to ensure successful reintegration into society,” Mr. Donyinah noted.

Both parties agreed to advance discussions and formalise the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding. The proposed partnership is expected to become a model for private-sector involvement in correctional rehabilitation and a boost to Ghana’s broader agricultural development goals.
