Asante Akyem Central Municipality was thrown into chaos on Wednesday evening, March 5, 2025, after a powerful explosion at a cluster of shops dealing in illegal mining (Galamsey) explosives left several people severely injured, including firefighters.

The blast, which occurred at approximately 7:03 p.m., sent shockwaves through the area, unleashing widespread destruction and panic.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in shops storing dynamite and other explosive materials before triggering a series of earth-shaking detonations.

The force of the explosions left dozens injured, with some victims suffering devastating injuries, including severed limbs. Firefighters responding to the inferno were also caught in the blast, sustaining various degrees of injuries. Emergency teams swiftly transported the wounded to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and the illegal storage of explosives in the area. Meanwhile, rescue operations are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure the safety of residents.

The explosion has reignited concerns over the dangers posed by illegal mining operations and the unregulated handling of hazardous materials. Residents and business owners affected by the blast are calling for stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.

Firefighters Under Attack

Meanwhile, as emergency responders arrived to battle the raging inferno, they came under attack from angry residents who pelted them with stones. The hostility led to the destruction of the first fire tender on the scene, rendering it out of commission. In a tragic turn, the driver of the fire truck collapsed after his vehicle was caught in the impact, while another firefighter sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, confirmed that a resident who attempted to warn firefighters to retreat lost his life in the explosion.

“He was trying to warn the firefighters to back off, but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed,” Bryden told Luv FM.

Massive Damage and Rising Tensions

The explosion occurred just 50 meters from a fuel station, sparking fears of an even greater disaster. Authorities are still assessing the full extent of casualties and structural damage as they work to stabilize the situation.

Security forces have been deployed to restore order as investigations into the cause of the explosion continue. The scene remains highly volatile, with residents and emergency responders still at risk.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
