The Attorney-General’s Office is reviewing a police docket alleging that Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, assaulted a policeman during the “Save the Judiciary” protest in May 2025.

The docket, completed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was sent to the A-G’s office with a cover letter dated June 27, 2025. Nearly five months later, it remains under prosecutorial review.

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed the development in an X post on Friday, November 7, 2025.

“I can confirm that the docket on the case, The Republic v Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault,” he wrote.

According to the CID report, the alleged incident occurred on May 5, 2025, when police officers deployed for crowd control attempted to maintain a restricted boundary with a metal barricade.

A 13-second video clip received by the Cybercrime Unit showed a confrontation between demonstrators and police officers.

The footage reportedly captured Mr. Afenyo-Markin “striking a police officer identified as No. 48632 G/Cpl. Forson Abel, stationed at Tesano District, was one of the duty officers.”

Cpl. Forson subsequently lodged a complaint at the Tesano Police Station on May 6, 2025, and later submitted a medical form after receiving treatment.

The CID said witness statements from Superintendent I. Ocansey, ASP Sulemana-Jallo Abdulalai, and ASP Nicholas Mensah corroborated the claim that Mr. Afenyo-Markin struck the officer “without any provocation.”

However, the MP also filed a counter-complaint the same day, alleging that he had been assaulted by Cpl. Forson. A police team later visited the Accra International Conference Centre to reconstruct the scene and reviewed CCTV footage obtained from the National Security Secretariat.

“The footage received from the National Security did not capture the assault incident,” the CID letter noted, adding that a separate video from the Police Public Affairs Department formed part of the investigation.

The CID confirmed that Mr. Afenyo-Markin was cautioned in the presence of an independent witness and released on self-recognisance bail.

Witness statements were also taken from NPP officials Sammy Awuku and Richard Ahiagbah, who appeared in the video near the MP.

The CID report further stated that Mr. Afenyo-Markin “failed to return the Police Medical Report Form despite several calls to him to do so.”

The docket, referenced 129/2025, is currently before the Attorney-General’s Department for legal advice and a decision on possible prosecution.
