Residents of Dorumankuma, a suburb of the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality in the Ashanti Region, are raising urgent concerns over the lack of basic amenities in their community.
In interviews with the press, the residents revealed the dire conditions they face daily and appealed to authorities, traditional leaders, and stakeholders for immediate intervention.
The community’s challenges include the absence of adequate toilet facilities, forcing many residents to resort to defecating in unhygienic open spaces such as refuse dumps.
This situation is exacerbated by the lack of refuse containers, creating an unsanitary environment that poses health risks.
Additionally, residents lamented the deplorable state of the roads, which are so dusty that they struggle to dry their clothes outside without them becoming soiled. The dusty environment has also been linked to respiratory issues among the population.
Hon. Adams Alhassan, the Unit Committee Chairman of Dorumankuma, highlighted the extent of the community’s plight, stating that his repeated appeals to authorities have so far yielded no results. “The situation is getting worse. Our classrooms have broken windows, and some have been converted into toilet facilities due to the lack of proper infrastructure,” he said.
Chairman Alhassan also expressed concern about the destruction of crops by herdsmen in the area, which has further deepened the economic struggles of residents. He called on traditional leaders (Nananom), the Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament, and the government to urgently address the issues.
“The community needs immediate attention. We are pleading for help to improve our living conditions. Our children deserve proper schools, we need good roads, and we cannot continue living without basic sanitation facilities,” he added.
The call for help from Dorumankuma echoes a broader concern about neglected rural communities and highlights the urgent need for sustainable development to improve the quality of life for residents.
