The Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Dr. Afisah Zakariah, has officially opened the Ministry’s 2024 Annual Summit and commemoration of World Children’s Day at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra.

The two-day summit, which began on November 20, 2024, and concludes on November 21, 2024, is themed “Promoting Equality and Inclusive Development through the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).”

In her opening address, Dr. Zakariah emphasized the summit’s significance as a platform for updating stakeholders on progress in gender equality, women’s empowerment, child rights promotion, and social development.

She noted that the gathering provides an opportunity for partners and the public to contribute to the effective implementation of new policies, including the recently passed Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024.

“This year’s summit will provide updates on work done so far in 2024 and seek your input for the rollout of new bills and policies. Together, we aim to ensure the successful implementation of the Affirmative Action Act and other initiatives that promote gender equity and inclusiveness,” she stated.

Coinciding with the summit, the Ministry celebrated World Children’s Day under the national theme “Our Future, Our Voice: Listening to A Future for Affirmative Action.” The highlight of the celebration was the 6th sitting of the National Children’s Parliament, where young representatives deliberated on key issues affecting their rights and the importance of gender equity.

Dr. Zakariah extended gratitude to development partners, including UNICEF, the World Bank, the World Food Programme (WFP), UNDP, and UNFPA, for their unwavering support. She also acknowledged contributions from other sponsors such as World Vision International, Plan International, International Needs, Children Believe, and Compassion International for making the World Children’s Day celebration a success.

The summit brought together distinguished personalities, including the Minister and Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection; Members of Parliament; representatives from MDAs and MMDAs; traditional and faith-based leaders; civil society organizations; and corporate bodies.

Dr. Zakariah urged full participation in the two-day program, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial for achieving equality and inclusivity.

“Once again, welcome to MoGCSP’s 2024 Annual Summit and commemoration of World Children’s Day. Let us continue working together to promote equality, protect children’s rights, and ensure sustainable development,” she concluded.

The event underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fostering inclusive development and amplifying the voices of children in shaping a future where equity and rights are prioritized.
