The Ga Traditional Council has officially declared a ban on noise-making activities within the Ga State, effective from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, June 4, 2026, in observance of the annual Homowo festival.
According to a press conference held by the Ga Traditional Council in Accra on Thursday, March 26, 2026, President of the Ga-Dangme Council and former Attorney-General Nii Ayikoi Otoo stated that the ban aims to ensure peace, solemnity, and spiritual reflection during this period.
The ban prohibits activities such as the use of microphones, clapping, tambourines, and other musical instruments during worship. Religious institutions are directed to confine their activities within their premises, and the use of loudspeakers outside churches and mosques, as well as roadside evangelism with megaphones, is strictly prohibited.
The directive applies specifically within the Ga State, while traditional areas including Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Kpone will announce their own specific dates for similar bans after May 4.
He stated that the joint task force, in collaboration with the Regional Security Council and the Ghana Police Service, will be responsible for enforcing the directive and prosecuting offenders.
Meanwhile, the Council has admonished the public, particularly visitors, to comply with the customary practice, which is protected under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana as part of the country’s recognised cultural traditions.
