The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has urged the government to take immediate steps to dualize major roads across the country to reduce the constant road accidents.
GPRTU, who expressed worries over the numerous accidents being recorded on major roads due to their poor state, blames the situation on the failure of governments to dualize them.
According to GPRTU, the accidents occurring on daily basis will be reduced when the roads across the country are in good shape.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in a sensitization exercise with drivers said there is an urgent need for government to dualize most of the major roads to save lives.
According to statistics from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service 2,222 crashes, 2,452 injuries and 321 deaths were recorded between January and February 2023.
Despite these figures indicating a fall as compared to the same period in 2022, the GPRTU is worried and wants the government to take the necessary steps to dualize major roads to further reduce road crashes.
The GPRTU together with the NRSA indicated that the recent accident involving the 2M express vehicle should be a wake-up call for the government to sure roads across the country are in good shape and dualized.
Not forgetting drivers, the NSRA also urged drivers to check their speed limits and drive with care.
