The General Secretary of the Mobile Money Operators Association, Evans Otumfuo, has revealed that Ghana Revenue Authority [GRA], implementers of the Electronic Transfer Levy, E-Levy, failed to engage them in any discourse concerning the operationalization of the new tax.
“We have not been consulted in any way even though we the Momo Vendors play a very crucial role in the implementation of the controversial E-Levy”, he claimed.
The General Secretary of the Mobile Money Operators Association made the revelation via a phone interview with Thelma Tackie, on the GTV Breakfast Show, Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
According to him, there has been one-way traffic since the start of the collection of the E-Levy.
“In most cases, there is corresponding traffic for momo transactions i.e., deposits, and withdrawals. But since Sunday there has been only one-way traffic. People are withdrawing without a corresponding deposit” Otumfuo disclosed.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has indicated that the implementation of the 1.5% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) will be done in phases.
It indicated that the decision to phase the implementation is due to its assessment of the readiness of the charging entities.
In a letter to all charging entities on the issue, the GRA said it has observed that the charging entities were yet to fully integrate with the E-levy Management System hence its decision.
“Following Ghana Revenue Authority’s assessment of the general readiness of some Charging Entities to integrate with the E-levy Management System, the Commissioner-General has decided on a modified phased approach for the implementation of the Levy from 1st of May 2022.”
