Eleven-year-old Arhin Daniel has tragically lost his life after drowning in an abandoned galamsey pit at Ekorso, a community near Nkawkaw-Kwahu in the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred during school leisure hours, as Arhin, a pupil at Abepotia Presby Basic School, went out with two friends to swim in the Asuboni River.
Community members told Myrepubliconline.com that the river’s flow had been obstructed by galamsey activities, making it hazardous for residents living in proximity. Eyewitnesses lamented the extensive blockage along the riverbank due to ongoing illegal mining operations.
However, the community members blamed the Chief of Ekorso for permitting illegal mining activities in the area despite numerous complaints from the community. Efforts to address the issue with the Chief’s palace yielded no tangible results.
Reacting to the accusation, Nana Mireku Kwabi, the Chief of Ekorso, expressed his concern over the unfortunate incident, disclosing that the mining site was under the jurisdiction of Nana Effah Opinamang III, the Obomeng Hene. He clarified that the concession belonged to Apollonia Company Limited, authorized to operate in the area.
The Chief admitted to the lack of visibility regarding the licensing status of the mining activities. Despite his efforts to warn residents about the dangers associated with the mining site, the tragedy occurred amidst heavy rainfall, causing the river level to rise unexpectedly.
One of the companions who accompanied Arhin recounted the harrowing experience, revealing their routine of swimming in the abandoned pits. Despite their familiarity with the area, Arhin’s inability to swim compounded by unforeseen circumstances led to the tragic outcome.
The community mourns the loss of a promising young life, sparking renewed calls for stricter regulations and enforcement against illegal mining activities to prevent further tragedies.
