E/R: Abandoned well kills 6-year-old boy in Koforidua Zongo

A tragic incident occurred on Monday, October 6, in Koforidua Zongo, in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, when a six-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an abandoned well.

According to reports, the child had been missing for some time, prompting his parents and residents to launch a search.

The search party discovered his slippers near the abandoned well, which raised suspicions and led them to investigate further.

His football was also seen floating in the well.

An emergency call was placed to the Ghana National Fire Service, which responded promptly and arrived at the scene around 8:00 pm on October 6.

The Eastern Regional Fire Service Command confirmed the incident.

“We rescued a six-year-old boy from an abandoned well that was not covered,” a Fire Service official said.

“We couldn’t pronounce the child dead upon rescue, since we don’t officially have that capacity. He was handed over to civilians, who rushed him to the Koforidua Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.”

The boy has since been buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.

In response to the incident, the Ghana National Fire Service has cautioned against uncovered or abandoned wells.

“All wells should be properly sealed if abandoned, and those still in use must be securely covered,” they directed.
