The chiefs of the Akyem Kotoku State have strongly rejected allegations made by Nana Boni Abankro, chief of Adausena, accusing Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, King of Akyem Kotoku State, of misappropriating funds from Newmont.
At a press conference on September 15, 2024, Nana Boni claimed that $100,000 and 2.4 million cedis allocated for the reconstruction of the Akyem Kotoku Palace had been mismanaged, alleging that his inquiries into the project made him a target for assassination.
In response, Obrempong Amo Kyeretwie I, Gyasehene of the Akyem Kotoku State, stated that their investigations revealed no funds had been received by Oseadeeyo from Newmont.
He emphasized that the king is entitled to various revenue streams from the mining company, debunking Nana Boni’s claims.
Regarding accusations of hiring thugs against the Adausenahene, Obrempong asserted that Oseadeeyo maintains a clean record both personally and publicly.
He also disputed Nana Boni’s claim to land ownership in Adausena, citing a High Court ruling that dismissed claims of absolute ownership.
Obrempong Tabi Anum, Nifahene of Akyem Kotoku State, dismissed allegations linking Oseadeeyo to illegal mining activities, asserting that he is actively combating such practices.
The history of land claims by occupants of the Adausena stool, from 1913 through the 1990s, has consistently been rejected by Kotoku history and the courts.
Background Context
In November 2023, chiefs from ten towns in the Newmont Akyem catchment area agreed to allocate part of the funds from the Newmont Akyem Development Fund for the palace’s reconstruction.
However, tensions rose when Adausenahene mobilized youths in April 2024 to challenge Oseadeeyo’s share of the revenue for development.
Oseadeeyo summoned Nana Boni to clarify the situation, but he failed to attend multiple meetings. Subsequently, a committee was formed to investigate Adausenahene’s conduct, leading him to make unfounded accusations against the king.
As the situation escalates, the future remains uncertain for the Adausenahene, who may face repercussions for his actions.
