Akyem Subi, a community in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region, is grappling with severe network challenges that have persisted for the past four months, disrupting communication, businesses, and social life.
Residents report that making phone calls has become nearly impossible, let alone accessing internet services. Investigations reveal that during the 2024 election campaign period, the Ministry of Communication and MTN Ghana initiated the installation of a network tower in the community. However, the project remains incomplete, worsening the existing connectivity issues.
The Akyem Subi Traditional Council, led by Chief Barimah Amoah Bosompem III, has issued a strong warning to MTN Ghana and the Ministry of Communication, demanding that the project be completed immediately or the tower be dismantled.
“We were enjoying our network before, but now, phone calls have become a major challenge. Residents have to walk nearly four miles to Akyem Kade or Akyem Nkwantanan just to make a call or access the internet. This is affecting businesses and even marriages in the community,” Chief Bosompem III lamented.
He further pleaded with President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and resolve the crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for restored connectivity.
The Assembly Member for Akyem Subi Electoral Area, Hon. Ebenezer Akoten, and the Unit Committee Chairman, Mr. Samuel, echoed these concerns, insisting that Akyem Subi is not a remote village that should suffer from such poor network conditions.
“We have made several attempts to resolve the issue, but nothing has changed. We call on the Ministry of Communication and MTN Ghana to act swiftly before the situation worsens further,” Hon. Akoten stated.
Community members expressed their frustrations, highlighting the impact on their livelihoods and relationships.
“Our businesses are collapsing because customers cannot reach us. Some marriages are also suffering, especially for those whose spouses live outside the community,” a distressed resident shared.
Many residents blame the unfinished tower for the network disruptions and are urging authorities to intervene immediately.
As the crisis deepens, the people of Akyem Subi remain hopeful that the government and MTN Ghana will take swift action to restore their network and prevent further socio-economic damage.
