Residents of Nkawkaw New station in the Eastern Region were thrown into a state of shock on Monday when they discovered a newborn baby found dead in a waste bin.

The dead baby was found in a soap box and dumped behind the public refuse bin after it was delivered.

According to an eyewitness, Sakyi John whiles speaking in an interview with Republic FM’s Andy Frimpong Manso said, he saw a mob trooping to Nkawkaw New station, close to the new mosque in the area where people usually dump their refuse.

He said, upon getting to the scene, he saw a newborn baby being kept in a soap box behind the public refuse bin. According to him, the new baby was found dead.

According to the eyewitness, the incident happened from 5:30 to 6 pm Monday.

In a phone interview with the Nkawkaw Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Rev. Dr Adane Ameyaw said that police received the information and acted swiftly to pick up the foetus from the said place.

According to him, the police see it as an abortion rather than a baby being born and abandoned because it is a fresh foetus.

He said the abandoned foetus has been taken and kept in the mortuary for the necessary investigation to commence.

“Yes, we had such information yesterday. We quickly moved our men to the scene to rescue the situation.

The baby has been kept in the morgue for now because we can’t just bury the body in the sense that we will have to do some clinical testing to identify whose baby it was after we arrest any suspects.

The swift intervention by our men salvaged the situation elsewhere it could have been eaten by dogs. The police see this as abortion because it’s a fresh baby, more of a foetus.

So I have directed the investigator to activate full investigation into the matter today and we are going to apprehend the perpetrators of this barbaric act”, he said while speaking to Andy Frimpong Manso in a phone interview.

He said, no arrest has been made but the police will continue a full investigation into the matter to initiate the arrest of whoever is behind this inhumane act.
