At least eleven people lost their lives early Tuesday morning in a devastating road accident near Amanase, a community close to Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The collision, which happened between 5:00 and 6:00am, involved a fuel tanker and a passenger Sprinter bus. According to eyewitnesses, the tanker — bearing registration number GR 1300-16 — veered off its lane and crashed head-on into the Sprinter bus, registered GW 6510-23, which was traveling in the opposite direction.
Some witnesses at the scene believe the tanker driver may have fallen asleep behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to drift into oncoming traffic.
The Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, confirmed that eleven people were pronounced dead at the scene. Several other passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.
Emergency responders, including the fire service and ambulance teams, worked tirelessly to recover the victims and clear the wreckage, as the community and commuters looked on in shock.
The accident has once again raised concerns about driver fatigue and safety enforcement on one of Ghana’s busiest highways.
