Apprentices learning various artisanal trades at the Kumasi Magazine are calling on the Nana Addo-Bawumia-led NPP government to urgently fulfill promises made to them.

They voiced their concerns over the struggles they face, highlighting the lack of support despite the government’s earlier commitments.

Many of the apprentices, frustrated by their current situation, revealed that they had initially placed their trust in the government after being assured of assistance during their apprenticeship. According to them, the NPP, prior to the last election, promised to provide incentives to ease their learning process.

“Just like the Free SHS policy, the government assured us that we too would benefit as apprentices. They pledged to provide us with tools and other essential equipment to enhance our skills, and even promised a financial allowance to support us,” one apprentice shared.

However, the apprentices expressed their disappointment, feeling abandoned by the government. Many of them, financially disadvantaged, were motivated to join the apprenticeship based on these promises, only to find themselves struggling.

“We wanted to learn these trades, but our families had no money. The government’s promises gave us hope, but now we are disillusioned. We come to work hungry, with no financial support. Some of us have even quit due to the hardship,” they lamented.

The apprentices are now appealing to the government to act swiftly and deliver on its promises, which they believe will help them complete their training.

Master artisans, who mentor these apprentices, echoed the call for government assistance. Master Oustars, chairman of the artisanal group and a mentor to over 60 apprentices, shared that the situation is becoming increasingly difficult.

“If the government fulfills its promise and provides us with incentives and financial aid, it will ease the burden on us. Technology is advancing, and with the right support, we can move forward. The country depends on artisans, and without help, progress will be slow,” he stated.

He warned of the potential consequences if apprentices were forced to abandon their training. According to him, there is a risk that those who become jobless could turn to crime, underscoring the urgent need for intervention to keep them in the workforce.
