On August 26, 2024, there was a troubling event in which thugs associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attacked members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper Manya Krobo constituency.

At a District Road Improvement Program (DRIP) event, where NPP supporters had assembled to welcome road construction equipment, fighting broke out.

The situation took a turn for the worse when NDC parliamentary candidate and MP, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, allegedly instructed his supporters to attack the NPP candidate and his supporters.

The Assemblyman for Akorkorma electoral area, Hon. Gabriel Kudavor, was severely injured in the attack. The NDC supporters also blocked the main highway, preventing the equipment from moving to the township.

The violence continued for about an hour, with NDC thugs pelting stones at the NPP constituency chairman, Philip Mamphey, and the police. The chairman and a police officer were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. The NPP leadership in the constituency has condemned the attack, describing it as shameful to democracy.

The incident highlights the NDC’s alleged resort to political violence, particularly in the face of looming electoral defeat. Their national chairman’s refusal to sign the peace agreement by the National Peace Council raises concerns about their commitment to peaceful campaigning. In contrast, the NPP encourages its supporters to remain calm and focused, preparing to reclaim the seat through peaceful means.

The Upper Manya Krobo constituency deserves better than political violence and intimidation. It is essential to address the root causes of this violence and work towards creating a more peaceful and inclusive political environment. By doing so, democracy can flourish, and citizens’ voices can be heard without fear of violence or intimidation.
