A heavy security – civilian standoff in Mpraeso, the Kwahu South Municipal capital erupted during the Confirmation of President Mahama’s MCE – nominee, Effah Osei Bonsu David ( Ato Plans).
Three persons, reportedly being members of the National Democratic Congress were arrested during the chaos.
The stand-off began when all persons inside the Assembly hall including journalists were walked out for the Assembly Members to begin casting their votes for the confirmation of the MCE – nominee.
An NDC – Member who came out of the hall was later seen trying to watch the proceedings from outside through the window. An officer, identified as Waris, a police – driver for the Eastern -North Regional Police Commander who was among four officers closely – standing behind the window asked the Members to move a step – inch back.
In a reprisal response, the NDC supporter who felt commanded declined moving back which prompted the officers to apply minimal force on him.
“Who are you? You cannot talk to me anyhow because you’re an officer. What if I say I won’t move back? You’re an officer and so what?”, the supporter exclaimed.
The officer who looked calmed earlier got infuriated and launched an attack on the NDC supporter which resulted in escalated confusion. Some Officers began using diplomatic means to resolve the challenges, however tempers went higher when an officer who was off duty laid an ambush on the supporter and slapped him from behind.
This resulted in a total chaos that saw officers use excessive force to arrest three persons in the process.
The suspects have been transported to Eastern North Regional Command for further Interrogation.
