The Koforidua Police Command has rearrested and remanded Vera Akosua Asare, a young woman accused of carrying out an acid attack on her boyfriend, following the death of the victim, Daniel Omane.

The girlfriend of the deceased who suffered acid attack.

His death has prompted fresh charges against the accused, who was previously out on bail.

The incident, which occurred earlier this year, shocked the Koforidua community. According to police reports, Vera Asare allegedly poured acid on the victim while he was asleep in his room.

The attack was reportedly triggered by tensions in their relationship, which had become increasingly strained over suspicions of infidelity.

The couple had been cohabiting for over a year after the birth of their daughter, now two years old. However, persistent quarrels over alleged cheating led Omane to end the relationship.

On the day of the assault, neighbours were drawn by the victim’s loud cries and rushed to the scene. They found Omane severely injured and Vera attempting to flee. She was quickly apprehended by co-tenants and handed over to the police.

Omane was initially rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery Centre at Korle Bu for critical care in February.

He remained on admission for months, undergoing multiple treatments and skin grafting procedures.

While Vera was initially remanded in custody following her arrest, the court later granted her bail to allow her to care for the child.

The victim’s family, particularly his mother Comfort Batsa, has spoken publicly about the financial strain the ordeal placed on them.

She revealed that the family had to sell a plot of land to pay for the rising medical bills but still fell short of covering the full cost of treatment.

Doctors at Korle Bu reportedly advised that Omane be flown abroad for advanced reconstructive surgery, but the family could not raise the funds necessary for such treatment.

The case is now expected to proceed under new charges following Omane’s death. Police and court officials say the investigation is ongoing.
