The Presbyterian University Ghana has held its 16th Congregation and Graduation ceremony on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the RTC Auditorium in Abetifi – Kwahu.
Delivering his report on behalf of the management of the institution, the President of the Presbyterian University Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said, the gathering was very paramount to celebrate the success of men and women who have worked hard to complete their respective programmes with the University.
The University graduated a total of 539 students, with which 270 were males and 269 females with a (ratio of almost 1:1; Males: Females).
School of Business
Under the school of Business, BSc Business Administration had a total of 90 students with 43 being males and 47 females respectively. BSc Agribusiness had 13 males and 3 females totalling 16 students, summing all graduates under the School of business to 106 graduands.
Faculty of Development Studies
BSc. Rural and Community Development had a total of 24 graduands. BSc. Environmental and Natural Resources Management staged a total of 21 graduands, bringing the total sum to 45.
Faculty of Science and Technology
BSc. Information and Communication Technology stood at combined graduates of 23, and BSc. Mathematics at a number of 3 students, totalling 26 graduands.
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
BSc. Physician Assistantship had 181 students. BSc. Nursing had 91 students whereas BSc. Midwifery had 39 students, totalling 311 graduands.
Faculty of Education
BEd. Social Studies had a total of 7 graduands.
Faculty of Law
LLB. Law had 44 total graduands, bringing the overall graduands to 539.
Summary of Activities – 2021/2022 Academic Year
The University made the Chaplaincy and the Chaplain Central in the activities of the University by making the Chaplain a member of the Management and recognised their role in its newly established Status and Regulations. This has led to the strengthening of Christian ethics and religious activities across their campuses.
The University attained Presidential status on March 3, 2022, which was granted to the University by the President of the Republic of Ghana in a short ceremony at the Jubilee House, Accra, on August 30, 2022.
The University also inducted Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana as the First Chancellor of the Presbyterian University, Ghana at the unveiling of the Monument Ceremony on September 12, 2022.
The University relocated its Computer Engineering programme to the Obo site of the University in April 2022. The Curricula for BSc. Automobile Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering programmes are being drafted for accreditation to augment BSc Engineering programmes.
Designs for the single-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments for staff are ready for construction to begin. A total of 10 units across the Campuses are being earmarked for the first phase.
Construction of the fence wall of the Okwahu Campus started in February 2022. The University hope to complete the project by the end of July 2023.
The University has signed a memorandum of understanding with KDG to assist the University in rebranding, marketing and fundraising under retainership. This will ensure financial sustainability for the University and enable major developments to be established.
It has also begun the implementation of the recommendations of the Committee of Enquiry that investigated the high staff attrition rate – i.e. respect and tolerance of staff, fairness and transparency, improvement in staff welfare and remuneration, infrastructure and development, creating the enabling environment for staff development and effective communication to halt further resignation of staff.
The University, under the Presidency of Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has initiated collaboration with Oxford University for the establishment of the Grants Office and Joint research.
It’s also continuing the construction of the Premier Hostel in Abetifi and is hopeful of commissioning next year.
Following its new Charter status, the University has begun developing new programmes such as PhD in Leadership and Management, MSc in Nursing, BSc in Communication Studies, MBA in Projects Development and MSc in Information Communication Technology. Already, it has submitted two programmes for accreditation, namely, PhD in Environment and Development and MBA in Human Resources Development and Management.
The University have an advanced plan in starting a Medical School at Asante Akyem Campus, Agogo. Already, it has committed portions of its land in Agogo for the construction and conversion of the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital into a teaching hospital as a requirement for the commencement of the Medical School.
It also initiated plans with the University of Qatar and Avnon Academy, Israel to establish a Food Security unit with the Primary focus of ensuring the availability of food along the value chain, for the Ghanaian economy at affordable prices whiles protecting farming interests.
The President, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu further called on the University’s Development partners, the business community, philanthropists and the Government to partner with the University in its development efforts.
Chancellor of the Presbyterian University, Ghana, Rt. Rev. Professor J.O.Y Mante urged the graduands to emulate the norms and ethics of the Presbyterian Church and its University as they go out to seek new opportunities.
“Today marks a very special day in the annals of this University. This is the occasion of the 16th Graduation Ceremony of the University and I want to probably welcome all of you into this very special graduation ceremony. Normally, Graduation days symbolize significant moments, the lives of the many, for whom many degrees have been conferred on them after their studies. For the past 15 years, degrees have been conferred on graduands by the mentoring Universities but this time, it has received the Presidential charter and I’m so happy that the University has been able to push through with all rights and privileges of a Presidential charter to operate as a fully-fledged private University. We’re grateful to God for this feet, and to all who have worked tirelessly to achieve the Presidential charter. I wish to express appreciation to mentoring institutions, namely the University of Ghana, the University Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. These institutions have helped in a lecture of now fully fledged University”.
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana as of today has about 2,500 basic schools and 35 Senior High Schools. It has some of the best schools in Ghana. It’s the first Church in Ghana to own two fully chartered Tertiary Institutions. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana serves the nation in the provision of Tertiary Education with 5 Colleges of Education and 57 Health institutions posing as the third largest health service after the Government of Ghana and the Catholic Church.
