The Salomey Volunteers Group, a non-profit organization based in the United States of America in collaboration with the Anidaso Health Ghana Mission is conducting a medical mission to pay-free surgeries for ailing but less privileged in the society in Kwahu.
At sidelined interview with myrepubliconline.com’s Andy Frimpong Manso, the coordinator for the event, Mrs. Rebecca said, the medical mission will last two weeks for persons living within the Kwahu block. Doctors from the Anidaso Health based in the US will be stationed at the Kwahu Government for next 2 weeks to operate on local residents suffering from tumours and other health-related issues.
“We’re local NGO, and we have done over the years programmes, linking foreign volunteers in the areas of Education and Health mostly. In this case, we’re at the Kwahu Government hospital, we are conducting a medical mission which will last two weeks, so doctors from an NGO called Anidaso Health based in the US, they will be here for the following two weeks. Today, we’re at the hospital premises because we’re screening patients, they’d be doing two weeks of free surgeries for local residents who suffer from issues like Hernia, thyroid and so on. And so, today, they’re screening, and for the next two weeks, we’ll be doing the surgery”, she said.
The coordinator added that the SVG will be conducting medical outreaches in Jejeti, Asuboni Rails and a few others.
“We’ll also be conducting medical outreaches in communities such as Jejeti, Asuboni rails and a few others”,
The SVG mission started in 2006 with a medical mission and the SVG has been conducting surgeries every two years.
In two weeks, the SVG will squeeze as many as surgeries it can but an average of 100 to 120 surgeries in two weeks.
“So in two weeks, we can only do so much, we squeeze as many as surgeries we can but they can conduct an average of 120 in two weeks”, she added.
She lamented that due to the covid-19 pandemic, the SVG could not conduct surgeries for the past 3 years, a situation she describes as unfortunate.
Beneficiaries are to free register, and then have their surgeries conducted freely without any cost. She affirmed that persons with or without National Health Insurance will be allowed to access the NGO’s paid-free initiative.
A surgeon with the SVG and the Anidaso Health Mission, Dr. Kelly Wagner noted that, after registering, surgeons will conduct physical and medical examinations on patients, whether they have a lump or bump and they will ask for their medical history and as well if they need some blood tests or ultrasound before they can be booked for surgery in the next week or two.
“We have to do a physical exam to know if they have a lump or bump, they show us the and we ask some questions about their medical history if they are taking any medications and then if they need some blood works, we send them to a lab or if they need an ultrasound scan, we send them to have that done so we can book them for surgery in the next week or two”,
A beneficiary of the Salomey Volunteers Group, Mad. Matilda Asiedu added that it’s been seven years since the SVG and the Anidaso Health Mission have been supporting her and 3 of her children.
She said the SVG conducted surgery for her son who fell from a tree and broke his thigh and palm. She has presented two relatives who are battling Hernia and are being taken care of by the Salomey Volunteers Group and the Anidaso Health Mission. She was also there to access the free health services by the SVG to treat her Hernia.
