Three persons believed to be relatives have lost their lives after a vehicle they were aboard plunged into a river in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision at Enyiresi along the Accra-Kumasi highway in the Eastern region.

The driver of the accident vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata with registration number GS 7776-19, reportedly lost control of the steering wheel, somersaulted, and plunged into a nearby stream while attempting to give way to an oncoming Sprinter bus, which was overtaking another vehicle.

All three occupants of the Hyundai vehicle—two females and a male—drowned instantly.

A joint rescue team of police and firefighters went to the scene to pull the car from the river.

The bodies were retrieved and deposited at the morgue pending identification.

This week has been bloody on the roads in the Eastern region due to multiple fatal crashes recorded.

Two persons died in a fatal crash involving a commercial Hyundai vehicle and an articulated truck at the Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra to Kumasi highway in the eastern region.

Many other passengers aboard the Hyundai vehicle were seriously injured and rushed to the nearby Asafo Health Center and Suhum government hospital.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Police.

The crash occurred on the 16th of May 2023 at about 7:am near the waterworks junction area in Adukrom.

According to an eyewitness, the tricycle, locally known as “Aboboya,” was loaded with concrete land demarcation pillars descending from Adukrom towards Aseseeso but reportedly failed to break, colliding with a KIA truck with registration number GE 7984 coming from the opposite direction.

The two persons aboard the tricycle died instantly, but the rider died upon arrival at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital, where eight other victims were rushed for emergency care.

Assemblymember for Adukrom-Methodist electoral area, Ebenezer Obiri Asare, explained that a total of twelve victims were involved.

Five were in the tricycle while seven were in the KIA truck.
