A woman, believed to be in her 40’s has been arrested by the police for allegedly dumping her newly born baby into a pit at Akyem Nkronso near Kyebi in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The mother, named as Ama Ataa, allegedly abandoned the two-day-old baby in the pit on Monday, and was arrested on Tuesday after a witness found the baby alive in the pit.
Sources say the suspect, who has given birth to six children with different men, decided to abandon the seventh child because the man with whom she gave birth did not accept responsibility to take care of the baby, and hence decided to dump the baby due to economic hardships.
Meanwhile, the baby after receiving treatment at the hospital, is said to be doing well, and is currently in the care of the wife of the chief of the town while the mother is in police custody assisting investigation.
