The Electoral Commission (EC) is meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) over violent incidents in the Awutu Senya East of the Central region at the ongoing vote transfer exercise in the region.
The violent clash between supporters of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party which occurred around 5am on Sunday, June 2, 2024, left at least three persons injured.
According to eyewitnesses, Ato Koomson, the son of incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, was stabbed in the chest and was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
Three members of the NDC were also injured and were rushed to the Kasoa Polyclinic for treatment.
The NPP and NDC have since traded blame over the incident, with the NPP accusing the NDC of attacking Ato
Koomson while he attempted to maintain peace.
The NDC, on the other hand, claims that Ato Koomson was behind the violence and has accused the police of selective arrest, as they have taken into custody the NDC constituency organizer, Daniel Techie Mensah.
The police have also arrested two persons in connection with the violence and are investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, the EC in a memo issued on Sunday, June 2 to its district officers, directed that agents of political parties must not be allowed access due to violent clashes at some of the transfer centres.
“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to the violent clashes occurring at some of the District Offices as a result of the Transfer of Votes Exercise.
“Regional Directors are to inform District Officers not to allow Agents of Political Parties to observe the Transfer of Votes Exercise with effect from, Monday, June 3, 2024”, the EC’s memo indicated.
However, on Monday, June 3, the NDC in a counter statement directed its agents across the country to disregard the EC’s directives.
“The National Democratic Congress therefore hereby calls on all its agents across the country to defy and disregard this outrageous directive by the Electoral Commission. All structures of the party, particularly Regional and Constituency Secretariats, are hereby directed to deploy NDC agents to all district offices of the EC to closely monitor the ongoing voter transfer exercise”, the statement signed by the party’s general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey revealed.
