EC sets September 2 for Akwatia by-election

Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission said the seat has officially become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election to fill the vacancy.

Nomination Process:

Nomination forms will be received from prospective candidates between Monday, August 11, and Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the EC’s Denkyembour District Office. Submissions will be accepted daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Requirements for Candidacy:

Nomination forms must be downloaded from www.ec.gov.gh between July 30 and August 13, 2025.

Each candidate must submit four completed copies of the form

Endorsements must be secured from at least 20 registered voters in the constituency (including a proposer and a seconder)

Two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background are required

A signed declaration of consent to the nomination must be included

Filing Fees:

GHC10,000 for general candidates

GHC7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs)

The EC urged all parties and prospective candidates to comply with the guidelines and timelines. It reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process in the Akwatia by-election.
