The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced it will to open voters register for the registration of new voters ahead of the District level elections on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
In a briefing in Accra on Thursday, August 17 dubbed, ‘Let the Citizen Know’, Chairperson of the commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa noted that the Electoral Commission is hoping to register about 1,350,000 new voters by the close of the registration exercise this year.
According to the EC, at the time of the last registration exercise in 2020, the National Identification Authority (NIA) had registered over 10 million persons.
“The EC will embark on voter’s registration in all 268 district offices of the Commission. The exercise will be held from September 12 to October 2″, Mrs. Jean Mensa said.
She also noted that, apart from the Nkoranza North and Nkoranza South districts in the Bono East Region where the elections will not take place, all other Electoral Areas totaling 6,272 will have their elections on December 19, 2023.
Responding to the amendment of the guarantor, the Chairperson said the commission is maintaining its drafted Constitutional Instrument (CI) and will not back down from making the Ghana Card the sole identification of a Ghanaian citizen.
