The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a re-run of the Council of State elections in the North East and Ashanti Regions, scheduled for Monday, February 17, 2025.
In an official press release dated February 12, the Commission explained that the decision was necessary due to two key issues. In the North East Region, the election ended in a tie, with the top two candidates securing six votes each, making a second round necessary to determine a winner.
Meanwhile, in the Ashanti Region, the election process was disrupted by violent attacks from thugs, preventing its completion. As a result, the EC has scheduled a fresh vote to ensure a fair and conclusive electoral process.
To prevent further disruptions, the Commission has formally requested assistance from the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Taskforce.
The security agencies are expected to heighten security measures at the election venues to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process.
The Electoral Commission reassured the public of its commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections while urging all stakeholders to support a peaceful re-run.
