The ECOWAS Commission has condemned the “attempted military takeover” in Benin, describing it as unconstitutional.
ECOWAS in a statement said that the incident represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin.
It has therefore called for the full respect of the Constitution of Benin.
ECOWAS also commended the government and the Republican Army for bringing the situation under control.
According to the Commission, it holds the leaders of the plot both individually and collectively responsible for any loss to life and property occasioned by their action.
It further pledged support for the government by deploying a standby force to help the people of Benin defend their constitution.
“ECOWAS will support the Government and the people in all forms necessary, including the deployment of the regional standby force, to defend the Constitution and the territorial integrity of Benin.”
