The former President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), who doubles as the Chairman of the Council of Elders for GUTA, Dr. Nana Ofori Ameyaw, has described the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trade Liberalisation Scheme as promoting unfair trade practices among its Member States.
According to him, the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), aimed at encouraging duty-free trade among its member states, has been infringed upon, with no measures put in place to sanction any state that breaches the rules and regulations.
He cited that Nigeria practices unfair trade with a ban on the importation of about forty-one (41) goods to the country through its provision, yet ECOWAS has turned a deaf year to their action.
He stated that this act by Nigeria is breaching the rules governing the state; however, there have not been any moves towards halting the practice labelled as ‘unfair trade’.
Speaking at the entrepreneurship seminar organised by the Senior Staff Association of the University of Cape Coast (SSA-UCC) with the theme ‘Empowering Senior Staff for Entrepreneurial Success: An Added Advantage’, he suggested that the government of Ghana should equally place a ban on all imported goods from Nigeria because they export most of their goods to the country to generate income, whereas Ghana cannot import to their country.
