The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwame Afenyo Markin, has donated GH₵ 100,000 to the Effutu Health Directorate to support efforts in combating a recent cholera outbreak in the constituency.
The donation, made on behalf of the MP by former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Zubairu Kasim, aims to enhance health interventions, provide essential logistics, and reinforce public health measures to curb the spread of the disease.
During the presentation, Hon. Zubairu Kasim emphasized the MP’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of his constituents. He recalled past initiatives undertaken by the assembly to address similar health challenges, stressing the urgency of collective action in the wake of the outbreak.
Beyond the financial support, Hon. Afenyo Markin has called for immediate intervention from the central government.
In a formal appeal to the Minister of Health and on the floor of Parliament, he advocated for the deployment of additional health personnel and the provision of critical resources to affected areas.
Receiving the donation, the Municipal Director of Health, Dr. Paulette Brown, expressed concern over the resurgence of cholera in the constituency.
According to Dr. Brown, the disease, which was previously under control in the region, has now claimed three lives and infected over 412 residents. She warned that the outbreak requires swift and decisive action, adding that “cholera knows no political affiliation.”
To curb the spread of the disease, the Effutu Health Directorate has scheduled a large-scale cleanup exercise.
The initiative will focus on clearing drains, removing waste, improving sanitation facilities, and promoting hygiene practices. Residents have been urged to participate actively by bringing cleaning tools and ensuring their surroundings remain clean.
Local authorities are also intensifying public education campaigns to sensitize residents about proper sanitation and hygiene measures to prevent further outbreaks.
The cholera outbreak has raised significant public health concerns in Effutu, with calls for enhanced water and sanitation infrastructure. Authorities are urging residents to adhere to hygiene protocols, including the proper disposal of waste and avoiding contaminated water sources.
