An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Addo (Esq.), has convicted eight men who admitted guilt in connection with an assault on former Minister of State and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election.
The court, however, deferred sentencing to Friday, August 29, 2025. In the meantime, the convicts have each been granted bail in the sum of GH¢80,000 with one surety.
The convicted persons are: Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed, also known as Bomba.
They were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). In addition, they faced three separate counts of assault, all contrary to Section 84 of the same Act.
The Case
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, told the court that the first complainant, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was a former Minister of State and sitting Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East. The second complainant, Majeed Mohammed Saana, is a trader residing at Alajo, while the third complainant, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, is the Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a businessman based in Tema.
According to the facts presented, the accused persons include businessmen, a driver, a mechanic, a station manager, and a private security officer, all residing in various parts of Accra, including Alajo, Mamobi, Newtown, Lapaz, Amasaman, Mallam Atta, and Fadama.
On July 11, 2025, the complainants visited polling centres during the Ablekuma North re-run of the parliamentary elections. When they arrived at the Methodist Church Polling Station, the first and second complainants, including Hon. Koomson, were allegedly attacked and assaulted by the accused persons.
Security personnel at the polling station intervened and rescued the complainants. However, the prosecution said the accused subsequently attacked the third complainant, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, without any provocation. He too was rescued by security officers at the scene.
The complainants later reported the matter at the Odorkor Police Station and the Accra Regional CID, where they were issued police medical forms and taken for treatment at a health facility.
The accused were later arrested and, in their caution statements, denied the allegations.
After investigations, they were charged and arraigned before the court.
