The New Patriotic Party (NPP), has set Saturday, April 13, 2024 to elect a candidate for the upcoming Ejisu constituency by-election following the death of the Member of Parliament and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

The late MP died on Thursday March 7 and per the constitution the Electoral Commission is expected to hold a by-election upon being informed by the clerk of Parliament.

Although the EC is yet to release a date for the elections, the governing NPP is expected to open nominations from Tuesday April 2 to Thursday April 4, 2024 and subsequently elect a candidate on April 13.

The dates set by the party were announced in a statement signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong adding that an aspiring parliamentary candidate shall procure Nomination Forms after the payment of a non-refundable application fee of GHȼ3,000 in bankers draft in favour of the New Patriotic Party National Headquarters, Accra.

The statement also revealed that, “To successfully file the nomination, an aspiring parliamentary candidate shall pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHȼ35, 000, also in bankers draft in favour of the New Patriotic Party National Headquarters, Accra”.

However, the statement added that, Women, Youth (persons aged between 18 and 40 years), and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) will enjoy a 50% rebate on the filing fees. They thus will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHȼ17,500.

Meanwhile, the EC is yet to announce a date for the elections.

Per the 1992 constitution of Ghana, the Clerk of Parliament is mandated to alert the EC of a vacancy within seven days, after which the EC has 30 days to conduct a by-election, or 60 days in case of the vacancy being occasioned by the death of an MP.
